What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is a chronic infection caused by bacteria that build up under the gumline. Left unchecked, it leads to inflammation, gum recession, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.
It starts with plaque not removed by brushing, flossing, or routine cleanings. Over time, this plaque hardens into tartar, irritates your gums, and triggers the immune response that begins to break down your soft and hard tissue support.
What are the Common Signs of Gum Disease?
If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, your gums may already be in trouble:
- Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums
- Gum recession or “long” teeth

An oral exam and periodontal charting are typically all that is needed to diagnose the stage of gum disease and plan the right treatment.
What are The Stages of Gum Disease?
- Gingivitis (Early Stage): This is the only reversible stage. Symptoms include redness, puffiness, and bleeding. Improved home care and a professional cleaning can often restore gum health completely.
- Mild to Moderate Periodontitis: At this stage, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating deeper pockets. Bone loss often starts here, and treatment is needed to prevent further damage.
- Advanced Periodontitis: Significant bone loss, deep pockets, chronic inflammation, and tooth mobility are common. Without treatment, tooth loss becomes likely.

Can Gum Disease Be Cured?
