Although gum disease is quite common, it should be taken seriously. In its advanced stage of periodontitis, gum disease can cause irreparable damage to your gums, teeth, and overall health. Sadly, too many people ignore the symptoms and wind up losing natural teeth unnecessarily. The good news is that gum disease can be prevented! Learning more about its causes and symptoms can help you reduce your risk of developing this condition.
What are the risk factors for gum disease? Drs. Alex Semidey and Sara Tarte from Semidey Dental explore six of them here.
The primary and avoidable risk factor for gum disease is inadequate oral care. Neglecting to brush and floss consistently allows plaque, a slimy layer of bacteria, to build up along the gumline. Over time, this plaque can solidify into tartar, which can only be eliminated by a dentist. This accumulation results in inflammation, which is the initial stage of gum disease.
Some individuals are genetically predisposed to gum disease. Studies indicate that as many as 30 percent of people might be more vulnerable, regardless of their dental care habits. If gum disease runs in your family, it’s especially important to keep up with dental care and regular check-ups.
The use of tobacco significantly increases the risk of gum disease. Smoking restricts blood circulation to the gums, diminishing the body’s capacity to combat infections and recover. If you smoke, be aware that your risk of gum disease is higher than that of people who don’t smoke. Treatment may also be less effective for you. Even tobacco products without smoke can cause irritation to gum tissues and lead to problems with the gums.
A diet that is deficient in crucial nutrients can compromise your immune system and diminish your body’s effectiveness in fighting infections. Shortages of vitamin C and other antioxidants can lead to gum inflammation and hinder the healing process.

Certain systemic diseases can increase the risk of gum disease. Diabetes, for instance, impairs the body’s capacity to combat infections, which increases the susceptibility of the gums. Additionally, other issues like heart disease, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disorders have been associated with periodontal diseases.
Additionally, certain medications can make you more prone to gum disease by reducing the production of saliva, which helps neutralize acids in your mouth and wash away bacteria and debris. Antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure medications fall into this category.
Stress can lead to harmful habits of teeth clenching and grinding, which can damage the supporting tissues of your teeth, making you more susceptible to infection and decay. Stress also weakens your immune system, making it difficult to fight the infection.
