Maintaining your oral health is a commitment to yourself, your well-being, and your healthspan. It requires not only consistent visits to our inviting office in Davie, Florida, but also a dedication to at-home care as recommended by your trusted Tooth Tribe. We’re here to support you every step of the way!
Preventive dentistry keeps the teeth, gums, and associated tissues and structures healthy by staying ahead of common causes of damage and tooth loss. And regular visits (check-ups) are a cornerstone of effective preventative care. With our team on your side, we help you and your family avoid the time and expense associated with treatments to resolve often painful conditions.
What can I expect during a visit?
Every visit to Semidey Dental is unique, but the first visit is particularly important. Our one-of-a-kind new patient experience includes a 90-minute initial consultation, one-on-one with one of our doctors. We take plenty of time to assess your current dental health and identify any problems that may exist. We strive to provide credible, clear, and transparent information to empower our patients. This knowledge is powerful; it helps patients understand what it takes to make a real difference in their health.
During this initial consultation, we dive into the findings, welcome specific questions, and chat with you about your goals. Together, we develop a plan to move your health in the right direction. While each patient is one of a kind, all of our guests should visit us at least twice a year. These six-month visits allow us to identify and monitor any changes since the last visit. Our dental hygienists also apply their professional skills and tools to clean and polish your teeth for a healthy, beautiful smile and fresh breath.
Why do I need a professional cleaning if I brush at home?
Great question! Preventative dentistry requires both professional care and home care. There is no substitute for professional cleanings because our hygienists are equipped to remove stubborn plaque buildup. This tartar cannot be removed with standard toothbrushes and cleaning tools. And, even with the best care at home, no one can remove all the plaque constantly forming on the teeth. Without proper removal, tartar erodes both the teeth and the supportive gums and bone by promoting the development of dental decay and gum disease.
Additionally, you may think that you are brushing and flossing “good enough.” But we can recommend ways to help you better clean between the teeth or in hard-to-reach places. We also suggest cleaning aides; for instance, electric toothbrushes are a good alternative to the standard toothbrush because they optimally break up plaque and penetrate the grooves between the teeth and gums.
What if you find something wrong during my visit?
Don’t worry! We’re here to help and will work with you to address any concerns. Sometimes, all it takes is a slight adjustment to your home care routine. At Semidey Dental, we believe in a conservative approach to treatment, recommending the least invasive methods to restore your oral health effectively.
FAQs
Why are routine visits so important?
Routine exams are an opportunity for us to catch problems before they cause damage to your mouth, overall health, and well-being. By maintaining a consistent oral hygiene/prevention program, no treatment may be necessary to keep your mouth healthy and your smile looking great. Cleanings are also an opportunity for us to remove damaging substances that you can’t remove alone with brushing and flossing. This professional service helps to keep harmful bacteria and plaque in check, minimizing your risk of decay and gum disease.
Do dental problems always cause pain?
No. You may only notice something is wrong after the decay or disease has progressed. This truth reinforces the importance of regular exams. Our dentists can spot early-stage oral problems when they produce little to no changes in the feel, function, and appearance of your mouth. With prompt care, we avoid further damage and the need for extensive, restorative treatment.
Will my teeth look whiter after a cleaning?
Yes! Our hygienists (or “hygeniuses”) not only use their special tools and training to remove harmful bacteria and stubborn plaque build-up (tartar), but they also lift surface stains from the teeth. This helps to keep your teeth’s healthy, vibrant hue. Plus, this service keeps your breath fresh, and patients love how their mouth feels clean afterward.
Will it hurt to have my teeth cleaned?
No service at our office should ever cause pain. We are in the business of easing pain. If your gums are tender, this can be a sign of oral disease. We can take appropriate steps as needed and determine the best course forward should you have greater needs beyond the standard cleaning.
Is fluoride safe?
Our approach is to introduce fluoride to children gradually. We start with a non-fluoridated toothpaste and work up to low-fluoride options. We can also advise on cleaning techniques to minimize the risk of ingestion. Empowering our patients with credible information that they can trust is a priority. You can read more about how we incorporate fluoride into prevention here.
Why would I need to visit you more often than every six months?
Some conditions, habits, and behaviors increase your risk of developing oral problems – from periodontitis (advanced gum disease) to oral cancer. These risk factors include inadequate or inconsistent oral care, poor nutrition, comorbidities like diabetes, certain medications used to treat illnesses, and smoking. When you have these risks, we want to check your mouth more regularly to stay on top of potential problems.
Is my child too young to visit the dentist?
Our tooth tribe cares for patients of all ages! You might find it surprising that the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association urge scheduling a child’s first dental appointment by their first birthday at the latest. At least one tooth should be noticeable in your child’s mouth by this time. Establishing good dental relationships and healthy dental habits is important early in life.
A healthy mouth fuels the overall well-being of your entire body. Now that you’ve learned a bit about us, let’s get to know you! Call our Tooth Tribe in Davie, FL, today at (954) 939-0996 to schedule your first visit.
