So… What’s up with Dustin’s teeth?

Dustin’s character is played by actor Gaten Matarazzo, who has openly shared that he lives with a condition called Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD). What is Cleidocranial Dysplasia?
When we break down the name, “cleido” means collarbone, “cranial” means head, and “dysplasia” means abnormal development. It occurs in approximately 1 in a million people worldwide, although it may be underdiagnosed due to the subtle nature of its signs.
People with CCD often have underdeveloped collarbones, narrow shoulders, and distinctive facial features, including wide-set eyes and a flatter nose. Importantly, intelligence and organ function are completely unaffected. The most significant challenges typically manifest in the jaws and teeth.
How CCD Affects Teeth
CCD often leads to:
- Delayed loss of baby teeth
- Permanent teeth that don’t erupt on time—or at all
- Extra teeth (supernumerary teeth) that crowd the jaw
- Underdeveloped upper jaws, sometimes combined with bite problems
These dental complications can make chewing, speaking, and smiling more difficult. Because bridges or implants can’t be placed until the jaw is fully developed—usually around age 18—treatment during childhood and adolescence often focuses on careful monitoring, removing extra teeth, and orthodontics.
