Creating healthy and beautiful smiles should be a pleasant and hassle-free experience for you and your family, and at Semidey Dental, it truly is! Treatments to align teeth or to fix a “bad bite” have cosmetic and functional benefits. Not only do you improve the appearance of your smile, but it’s easier to brush and floss between correctly-positioned teeth for an oral health boost.
Braces have traditionally been the “go-to” to correct teeth with either too much or too little space between them, or irregularities with how the opposing teeth in the upper and lower jaws meet each other when the mouth is closed (known as your “bite”). Metal wires are threaded through brackets, which are then connected to the teeth with special bands or elastics. Altogether, these parts apply the gentle, consistent pressure needed to reposition teeth.
Invisalign®, however, straightens your teeth with aligners or clear dental appliances that resemble nightguards, retainers, bleaching trays, and other oral devices that slip in and out of the mouth. They are removable. So, you can take them out prior to eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Since the aligners are made from a transparent, thin plastic that is customized to fit your teeth snugly, no one notices them, and they are not a pain to wear or adjust to.
The treatment experience varies from patient to patient. However, we generally start with a consultation. During this visit, a digital or virtual model of your mouth is made. So, you can view how your teeth will look throughout every stage of treatment. You can see how Invisalign improves your smile and the results of treatment before the first aligner is worn! This model is also used to make the aligners themselves. During periodic recall visits or “check-ins,” Dr. Alex or Dr. Sara can also provide you with more aligners.
Yes. Your aligners should be worn at all times, except during the instances noted above. This generally means a daily wear time of 20 – 22 hours. Otherwise, your treatment may not stay on track, and your beautiful results may be delayed. Also, be sure to wear the aligners in the correct sequence. Each aligner may look the same, but there are slight differences between them. They are marked, so you always know the right aligner to wear next.
Many of our patients at Semidey Dental complete treatment in around 6 – 8 months, which compares favorably to braces. Traditional orthodontic treatment has required a significant time commitment, with “mild” cases taking anywhere from 12 – 18 months and “severe” cases requiring 24 – 30 months (or even longer). Total treatment time depends on factors such as your specific needs, as well as how you comply with wearing and caring for your aligners.
Normally, aligners are changed every 2 weeks, but with special techniques and devices such as the Munchies® VIBE, an orthodontic tool that uses high-frequency vibrations to improve clear aligner therapy. It is designed to accelerate tooth movement, optimize aligner seating, and alleviate discomfort. The vibration stimulates salivary flow to combat dry mouth and may help with pain relief as well.
Yes. We know you want to protect your beautiful, healthy smile post-treatment. To prevent relapse or the natural tendency for the teeth to shift back into their pre-Invisalign® positions, wear your retainers as advised by your dentist. This might include wearing them “full time” at first and then transitioning to nightly wear once we confirm that your teeth are “stable.”
