Invisalign® is meant to be the easy, subtle alternative to traditional braces — and for most people, it really is. But the little habits you build day in and day out are what keep treatment moving smoothly so you can see your new smile sooner. If you’ve been searching for an Invisalign® dentist, Semidey Dental would love to help you get there. Here are seven tips to set you up for success.
The only times your aligners should come out are when you’re eating or cleaning them. That’s it. The trays do the work of straightening your teeth, and they can only do that job if they’re in your mouth. Skip enough hours, and your treatment timeline starts to slip. Stay consistent, and many of our patients wrap up in just six to eight months.
Drs. Alex Semidey and Sara Tarte recommend soaking your aligners in a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water — do this while you’re brushing and flossing so it’s all part of the same routine. A few things to avoid: hot water (it can warp the trays), toothpaste, and anything abrasive. Stick to a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild antibacterial soap, and your aligners will stay clear and fresh.
Coffee, tea, soda, juice — all of it can stain your trays. Since one of the biggest perks of Invisalign® is that nobody can tell you’re wearing them, stained aligners kind of defeat the purpose. On top of that, sugary drinks trapped against your teeth are a fast track to cavities. Just pop the trays out, enjoy your drink, rinse your mouth well, and put them back in.
It’s easy to mix up. Each aligner is numbered and marked with a “U” for upper and “L” for lower, so you always know which tray goes where. Follow the sequence — typically switching to the next set every one to two weeks — and your teeth will move exactly as planned. Getting out of order can throw the whole process off.
When your aligners aren’t in your mouth, they should be in the case you received at the start of treatment — not wrapped in a napkin, not sitting on the counter, and definitely not anywhere near the dog. If a tray gets lost or damaged, give us a call right away. We’ll walk you through the next steps. And please don’t try to fix a broken aligner yourself — household products aren’t made for your mouth and can make things worse.
During Invisalign® treatment, we recommend hygiene visits every three months instead of the usual six. We can combine your cleaning and your orthodontic check-up into one visit, so it’s not as much of a time commitment as it sounds. Staying on top of these visits helps us catch anything early and keep your treatment on schedule.
Once your teeth reach their final position, a retainer is what keeps them there. Without it, teeth have a tendency to drift back toward where they started — and nobody wants that after all the work you’ve put in. You may need to wear it full-time at first, then just at night once things have settled. It’s a small step that protects everything you’ve worked toward.
Follow these tips and your treatment should go smoothly from start to finish. And if something ever comes up or you have questions along the way, Semidey Dental is just a short drive from Plantation. Give our Tooth Tribe a call at (954) 939-0996 — we’d love to set up a time to talk.
