Is my child too young to visit the dentist?
It is never too early to develop positive associations with dentistry and the healthy habits that can be carried with each child well into adulthood. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association recommend that the first dental “checkup” be scheduled within six months of the first tooth coming in or by the first birthday (whichever comes first). This visit is an opportunity to catch and address any problems early, before they become bigger issues that affect your child’s development. It’s also a great time to advise on ways to care for your child’s mouth when they can’t care for their gums and developing teeth themselves.
Why do these early visits matter when baby teeth just fall out?
Just because baby teeth are temporary does not mean they lack importance. In fact, they are vitally important to your child’s oral development. They serve as “placeholders” for permanent teeth, guiding them into their proper alignment. They also support healthy nutrition, facial structure development, and clear speech patterns during these pivotal growth stages.
Do I need to visit your office if my teeth look and feel fine?
Yes! Even healthy patients with no signs of problems need to maintain checkups at least two times per year. Why is this? Problems with the teeth and gums tend not to cause any noticeable symptoms until after damage has been done. We want to intervene before you notice blood on your toothbrush or sensitivity every time you drink something sweet or cold. These are signs of conditions like gum disease and tooth decay, and they can be prevented with regular visits to our office for cleanings and exams. Dr. Alex and Dr. Sara have the knowledge and the technologies to identify early problems that cause little to no symptoms before they damage your smile.
Isn’t tooth decay and tooth loss just a normal part of aging?
Absolutely not! We can’t say it too often, oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease are highly preventable. Our patients of all ages have been able to keep their teeth with consistently good home care and routine checkups. During each checkup, we assess for changes that often occur as patients get older. Changes in their health and the medications taken to control diagnosed diseases can affect oral health. So, we may need to incorporate new products or preventive services into their hygiene routine. Our recommendations at Semidey Dental keep pace with patients’ changing needs. Should our patients need a little more “help” beyond preventive care, we can still preserve their teeth with procedures such as dental crowns.
