Freddie Mercury has been gone for more than 30 years, but his music still fills arenas, playlists, and even movies like Bohemian Rhapsody. As a dentist, what really caught my attention wasn’t just the music—it was Freddie’s belief that his extra teeth were the secret to his incredible four-octave range. Whether that’s fact or myth, his story opens the door to something I see every day: how much our teeth and bite shape not just our smiles, but the way we see ourselves.
Reports of what Freddie’s actual dental condition was aren’t consistent. Even as a dental “insider,” I can’t just summon his X-rays to come up with a diagnosis. But we can be reasonably certain that, based on his account, he had a condition called mesiodens—extra front teeth.
Studies show that up to 2% of the population have this condition, which falls under the broader category of supernumerary teeth (extra teeth that can develop anywhere in the mouth). It affects men twice as often as women.
Mesiodens usually presents as a single extra tooth, but Freddie reported having four extras, which would be extremely rare and unique. Extra teeth can change the eruption path of permanent teeth, creating crowding, bite issues, and jaw misalignment. They’re often removed surgically, but Freddie chose to keep his teeth.
Reports are consistent about Freddie being very self-conscious of his smile. As a kid he had the unfortunate nickname “Bucky,” which he hated. The complex was partly responsible for his iconic mustache, used to cover his obvious underbite.
Much to his credit, even though he disliked his teeth, he never got them fixed because he feared it would alter his ability to sing. For him, his teeth were tied to his art.
But here’s the thing—most people don’t want to hide their smile behind a mustache, beard, or closed lips. They want to smile confidently in photos, conversations, and moments that matter. That’s where modern cosmetic dentistry changes the game.
If Freddie were alive today, he would have options. Lots of them. Invisalign clear aligners can gently move teeth into better alignment without metal braces. They’re nearly invisible, removable, and ideal for adults who want discreet treatment. Cosmetic dentistry offers veneers, bonding, whitening, and reshaping to enhance the look of a smile once teeth are properly aligned. For patients with bite issues (like underbite or crowding caused by extra teeth), treatment can improve not just appearance but function—making it easier to chew, clean, and maintain long-term oral health.

Interestingly, research out of the UK suggests his legendary range wasn’t due to his extra teeth at all. Instead, it came from his uncanny ability to use parts of his vocal cords most of us don’t engage. When he sang, he could recruit his false vocal cords (vestibular folds), producing everything from a gravelly growl to soaring highs.
So while his voice was a matter of biology and skill, his smile was a matter of choice. He chose not to change it. And the world loved him anyway.
