Get the “royal treatment” with quality porcelain dental crowns … as sturdy as they are stunning!

At Semidey Dental, our Tooth Tribe in Davie, Florida, prioritizes education and communication. We believe that well-informed patients make the best decisions for their sustained oral and overall health. We like to explain specific treatments in a way that is clear and memorable.

For instance, we compare dental crowns to football helmets. Just as a helmet protects the head from injury, our high-quality porcelain crowns protect the underlying tooth structure from further damage. In fact, crowns may be the only way to preserve damaged teeth, helping to avoid extraction. By preserving the tooth, we eliminate the need for replacements like bridges or implants.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Crowns are essential for restoring the strength and beauty of damaged teeth. If you have a fractured tooth, a large cavity, worn or old fillings, or decay, a crown might be the perfect solution. Crowns are also commonly used to protect teeth that have undergone root canal therapy.

In cosmetic dentistry, crowns are ideal for cases where teeth are not suitable for more conservative treatments like veneers. Additionally, crowns play a crucial role in replacing missing teeth, whether with traditional bridges or dental implants.

So, whether you need to fix damage, enhance your smile, or replace a tooth, crowns offer a reliable and effective solution.

How do I get a crown?

All treatments at Semidey Dental begin with a consultation visit. If a crown is the right option for you, here’s what you can expect:

  1. Design and Preparation: We start by designing your crown and preparing the tooth. Using advanced precision technologies like intraoral cameras and digital X-rays, we collect detailed scans and information about the tooth. Any existing damage must be removed to give your tooth a second chance. The tooth is then reshaped to ensure the crown fits perfectly.
  2. Temporary Crown: We place a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being made by our lab.
  3. Permanent Crown: Once the permanent crown is ready, we remove the temporary one. If the permanent crown looks and feels great, we cement it securely to your tooth.

This streamlined process ensures your crown is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, giving your tooth the best possible restoration.

How do I care for my crown?

FAQs

Can a crown still get a cavity?

Yes. Dental restorations don’t decay like natural teeth. However, the tooth beneath the crown remains vulnerable to cavities and other forms of decay. For this reason, it is important to remain vigilant about brushing and flossing. Take extra care when cleaning at the gum line. We can demonstrate proper cleaning techniques and provide samples of oral care products for you to take home.

What should I do if my crown breaks?

Contact us right away. Remove any parts of your crown that may have broken off in your mouth. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to soothe and sterilize the area. When you call us, we can also advise on ways to address any sensitivity or discomfort that may result from damage to this protective covering.

How do you treat a damaged crown?

It depends on the type of damage. For small chips or cracks, we can strengthen the affected area with dental bonding material. If you have a more significant fracture or large crack, we will likely need to replace the crown. While our crowns are durable, they can wear over time. If not replaced promptly and as advised, it can damage the underlying tooth structure, potentially leading to the loss of the affected tooth.

What happens if my crown falls off?

We can advise on specific steps. In general, it’s important to store the crown in a safe place (like a Save-a-Tooth® container – a perfect addition to any dental first-aid kit). Do not try to re-cement the tooth yourself, and by no means should you try to glue it back on! When you arrive at our office, Dr. Alex or Dr. Sara can recement the tooth properly, using professional products and techniques. We’ll inspect the crown for any cracks or damage. Crowns can be securely reattached to your tooth as long as they remain intact and in good condition.

How much do dental crowns cost?

The cost of a crown varies based on factors such as the material used to make it. Our treatment recommendations are based on what is most appropriate for you, including the location and function of the tooth being crowned. While important, cost should not be the driving factor behind your decision. Some materials may offer better value over the long term, as they last longer and may be more appropriate for your situation.

Does insurance cover crowns?

Crowns used for cosmetic purposes (such as to cover up a very misshapen tooth) are generally not covered by dental insurance plans. If your crown is deemed a medical necessity, then at least a portion of your treatment should be covered as “major restorative dental work.”

What if my crown isn’t covered by insurance?

We understand that insurance does not apply in all instances. In these situations, you can finance your crown through Sunbit. Financing can also help with any out-of-pocket expenses not covered by insurance. It can also be helpful for our patients without dental insurance. Semidey Dental encourages you to enroll in our Smile 365 Membership Plan as an alternative to traditional dental insurance. For a predictable annual fee of $1 per day, you receive 30% off dental crowns, and many of the preventive services necessary for a healthy, beautiful smile are also covered.
